July 9-13: Wilderness Awareness, Ocean Life, Dinosaurs and Fossils: Kim Ridley, The science writer:

 http://www.kimberlyridley.org
Science writer Kimberly Ridley is the award-winning author of nonfiction books that invite children and their grown-ups to explore the real-world magic and mystery in their own backyards.  Her joy is sharing her love of nature and writing with kids through her books and school visits. Kimberly’s picture books, The Secret Pool (Kirkus starred review) and The Secret Bay, have received honors including Riverby Awards from the John Burroughs Association for “outstanding natural history books for young people.” Her newest book is Extreme Survivors: Animals That Time Forgot. She holds an MS in Science Journalism from Boston University and lives with her artist husband and their cat Tilly. Kimberly spends as much time as possible exploring the woods, fields and shores around her home in Brooklin, Maine following her curiosity.

Kim’s husband Tom Curry the well-known award winning artist: http://tomcurrymaineartist.com/#
As a plein air painter, I immerse myself in landscape to explore the relationships between stillness and flux. What we call a “place” is a paradox—it is not fixed but always changing: the light shifts from moment to moment, water is never still, clouds come and go.
For the past 22 years, I have painted the landscape around my home in Maine, including a small island just offshore that has become the subject of a series of more than 60 paintings, many of which are collected in the book “Island”, published in 2012

Dr Henry Kriegstein and his passion for paleontology! http://www.mvtimes.com/2017/08/22/dr-henry-kriegstein-speaks-vineyard-haven-library/ will bring in part of his outstanding collection of dinosaur skeletons and fossils, show slides and talk about his impressive archeological excavations.
There will be an Art Show, Performance and Speakers on Friday at noon

July 16-20: Arm of the Sea Theater   https://www.armofthesea.org
Unique and unusual environmentally and socially conscious Puppet and Mask theater. :

“Our mission is to create theater that inspires wonder, provokes thought, gives joy and enriches the public imagination. We believe that such theater should be easily accessible to a wide range of audiences. Thus, many of our performances take place in non-traditional spaces and at free outdoor festivals. We strive for a theater of visual poetry–handmade & archetypal–imbued with the urgencies of the Moment and the elemental impulses of Human/Nature.”

Arm-of-the-Sea was founded in 1982 by the multitalented Marlena Marallo and Patrick Wadden as an experimental hybrid performance group combining art, ecology and social action. We continue to experiment with this ephemeral art form as a symbolic visual language that can illuminate the links between human communities and the life-support processes of the planet. The campers will have the exciting and inspiring opportunity to create masks, puppets, prints, drawings and paintings with these award winning and highly talented artists, Patrick Wadden and Marlena Marallo. We will have an Art Show, Performance and speakers on Friday at noon.

Arm of Sea Theater will also do one of their own amazing, unique and expressive performances tba on Friday, July 20th, 6 pm at Owen Park in Vineyard Haven.

July 23-27: Mask making with Eric Bornstein and Comic Books and Cartooning:

http://www.behindthemask.org:  The children will have the opportunity to create a large mask and costume of a well-known luminary or hero from the past or present or someone from their own imagination and write a short script about them to perform on Friday at noon. (by choice) Visionary Masks: Art for Social Change: Join Fulbright Scholar and award-winning mask maker Eric Bornstein as we build and bring to life masks of visionary world leaders, heroes or someone or creature from our imagination. Mask making allows us to embody diverse characters, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or nationality. The campers will get to create the scenery, props and music for this excellent production. We will also weave in some conversations about the very effective movement currently going on this Spring inspired and led by young people to bring safety to schools and public spaces.

Comic Books and Cartooning: We have a very accomplished visual artist joining us this week, Dan Cooney, who specializes in Comic Books and Cartooning. He will do a workshop with the campers and they will be able to learn the basic skills of drawing cartoons and comic characters. (by choice).

Eric Bornstein and Margaret Moody will perform the Chinese culture-themed program, “Monkey King Makes Mischief in Heaven” on Wednesday July 25th 3:30 pm at the Vineyard Haven Public Library.

Dan will bring in an abundance of materials, decorations, paint and glue for the children to fabricate an original puppet. They are encouraged to construct their own inspired, unique design, not something from an animated feature or video game. They will get to make a flying, dancing or shadow puppet and there will always be more possibilities. Hopefully imaginations will be running wild. They will also (if they choose) be writing their own puppet shows and creating their own props and scenery. We will continue to work in our organic garden and explore the ocean and its creatures during our beach and swim time.

The Power of One

One song can spark a moment
One flower can wake the dream
One tree can start a forest
One bird can herald spring

One smile begins a friendship
One handclasp lifts a soul
One star can guide a ship at sea
One word can frame the goal

One vote can change a nation
One sunbeam lights a room
One candle wipes out darkness
One laugh will conquer gloom

One step must start each journey
One word must start each prayer
One hope will raise our spirits
One touch can show you care

One voice can speak with wisdom
One heart can know what’s true
One life can make the difference
You see, it’s up to you!!

I am only one, but still I am one.
I cannot do everything, but still I can do something;
and because I cannot do everything,
I will not refuse to do something I can do.

We don’t need more money,
we don’t need greater success or fame,
We don’t need the perfect body or even the perfect mate.

Right now, at this very moment, we have a mind,
which is all the basic equipment we need to help the world

Be a better place.
